Understanding connection requests

on 14. October 2010

Collaboration is essential in project management. Merlin supports PMs in their every day work in that it allows collaboration to their projects over 3 kinds of interfaces. Once a project has been shared with either Merlin for Mac OS X or Merlin Server, it may be accessed by other Merlin for Mac OS X applications (acting as clients), supported web browsers or iOS devices.

How does this work?
The short answer is: “easily“. For the longer answer please read here (more…)

Merlin 2.7.7 is available

on 29. July 2010

Today we published another maintenance update for Merlin and Merlin Server. Here are the changes.

Resolved Issues in Merlin

  • In combined projects, the utilization view was not refreshing under some circumstances.
  • The resource’s cost accrual setting “at start” did produce the same result as “prorated”.
  • Start dates of linked projects were deletable via the project link inspector.
  • In Merlin Web Sharing, the default time zone was not set to GMT, which resulted in wrong creation dates of elements.
  • Fixed an issue in the licensing system for Merlin iPhone.
  • The status attribute was not selectable from within the predicate editor for elements.
  • The value for “Given Startmode” was not exported properly in CSV export.
  • Some access rights on creating project files did not set correctly.
  • The “Merlin Quick Guide” is now in French language as well.
  • Some translation issues have been fixed.

Resolved Issues in Merlin Server

  • Merlin Server brought an error message for port 7090 after some time of work.
  • Merlin did hang on saving a master project with aliases on Merlin Server files.
  • A crash could appear when all numbers of a port of a custom server were deleted.

Merlin iPhone – how does it work?

on 6. July 2010

Merlin iPhone is such a great option for mobile project managers. Share your projects with Merlin for Mac OS X and the optional iPhone sharing service or use a Merlin Server in which iPhone share is build-in. As long as you have a connection to the mobile data net or WLAN hotspot, with Merlin iPhone you can access your project from anywhere.

It all sounds great to you but how does it work? Easy and straight forwards (as always in Merlin).

Check screenshots of the app in the product page, watch accompanied screencasts illustrating the functionality, read the  Merlin iPhone QuickStart Guide, or test it for your own.

app storeWherefrom to download it? Merlin iPhone app is available in iTunes Store as free download.

Not always online? That’s fine with Merlin iPhone. You can view your project offline, and will need an online connection only when making changes and populating the new state of your project.

What about iPad or the new iOS 4? Merlin iPhone runs on iPhone 4 and on iPhone devices with iOS 4 just as well.  Our developers are already working on an adjusted version to look better on the iPad or the new iPhone 4, so stay tuned.

How do I setup my router? Just proceed as explained in our blog post ‘using Merlin’s web module‘. Web and iPhone sharing are both using the same port and our configuration suggestions apply for iPhone sharing too.

Merlin, web sharing without Merlin?

on 10. May 2010

Merlin was recommended to us as alternative to MS Project on the mac. From what we see on your webpage, we like it very much. Can we purchase the web sharing option and use only your web based solution?

Please note that web sharing is a complementary option for your Merlin application. This means you need to purchase also a Merlin license and install it along with your web sharing license:
web sharing

If you license your Merlin for Mac OS X appropriately you can than create your projects in the Mac OS X application and share them for web access.

Let the Merlin application running and having the project open as long as want to have it accessible. Even if you decide to work with your project solely over the web browser, don’t quit Merlin or let the mac fall into standby mode.

How to access Merlin projects from dynamic-IP driven locations

on 9. March 2010

If you are publishing Merlin projects from a computer that has a dynamically generated IP address, this can cause problems for your users already having received the project URLs and use in the meanwhile obsolete IPs to access the projects.  This situation easily occurs, as the IP address of your router changes upon re-connecting to your internet provider.

In this case the actual project URLs will fall out of sync with the URL and IP address that Merlin has originally published. Fortunately, there is a solution readily at hand thanks to the free service provided by DynDNS.org that allows you to create a static host name that can be used instead.

Merlin on a web browser

on 5. March 2010

The other day we received the following question in support:

We are testing Merlin for project management on the Mac and are very interested to use your solution but there is one functionality which seems to be not covered in the web access; we are not able to add elements (risk, issue, or files)

That’s correct. Merlin in the web module allows users working on other platforms to collaborate on Merlin files using a web browser*. It is not just another implementation of the Merlin Mac OS X application for the web.
While behaving similarly to the native Merlin application, its functionality and graphical user interface  is deliberately minimalized** to insure better usability from web users not having deeper Merlin knowledge.

*) Supported web browser: IE7, IE8 in compatibility mode, Safari 4, Firefox 3

**) All differences between Merlin on Mac OS X and in the Web module: here
