Before Frank Blome founded ProjectWizards in 2002, he had worked as a project manager at large companies such as Bertelsmann AG, mostly on IT and software projects, with risk management as his focus. He brought that craft with him. ProjectWizards started out as a consultancy, and the decision to go with Apple ran against the grain. It had a lot to do with security: Frank had seen the ILOVEYOU virus bring thousands of employees at a global corporation to a standstill in 2000. He was determined that this would not happen to him. Add to that the quality of the devices and his demand for good tools. For project management, his actual work, there was nothing usable on the Mac. So he had it developed. That was the beginning of Merlin.
The kick-off with developer Frank Illenberger took place in Frankfurt on 9 April 2004. A few months later, Apple invited us to show Merlin at the Apple Expo in Paris. What began as a tool for our own needs became a product for everyone: Merlin 1.0 was released on 9 November 2004.
The consultancy became a product company. Merlin became Merlin Project, today one of the leading project management applications in the Apple ecosystem. In 2024 adoc Studio joined it, our tool for structured technical documentation. What has stayed the same over the years: the stubborn preference for doing one thing thoroughly rather than many things by halves.
And the story continues. With Marvin Blome, the next generation is stepping up. He is responsible for marketing and is taking on more of the management tasks step by step, growing into his father's role over the coming years. Continuity matters more to us than a quick handover.
