Merlin Server: MacOS X Firewall

With Merlin Server you can publish your saved Merlin project files for remote access by:

  • other Merlin for Mac OS X applications. This will allow you to collaborate with other Merlin users on the same project file.
  • a web browser. This allows you to collaborate on files on the go or even when using a Windows machine.
  • iPhone, iPad or iPod touch using Merlin’s own app for iOS devices.

When allowing external access to your machine you should consider setting up a Firewall. This is usually done in your router, but some users would like to use the built-in MacOS X Firewall. Here is a small description of how to set your Firewall for Merlin Server on a current MacOS X 10.7.4 (Lion) configuration.

Merlin Server

If you want to add exceptions for the Merlin Server services on this MacOS X, locate first the MerlinServer.prefPane on your machine. You will find it in one of the following paths:

/Library/PreferencePanes (recommended location)

~/Library/PreferencePanes

Right click it  to ‘Show Package contents’ and locate the ‘MerlinProjectServer ‘and ‘MerlinWebServer’ applications under Contents/Resources.

Now add them both by drag & drop onto the exceptions list in the ‘Advanced’ Firewall dialogue. (more…)

Understanding connection requests

Collaboration is essential in project management. Merlin supports PMs in their every day work in that it allows collaboration to their projects over 3 kinds of interfaces. Once a project has been shared with either Merlin for Mac OS X or Merlin Server, it may be accessed by other Merlin for Mac OS X applications (acting as clients), supported web browsers or iOS devices.

How does this work?

Merlin Server – enabling iPhone sharing

enable MerlinServerWe have described in a previous post how to share projects for iPhones, iPads and iPod touches with Merlin for Mac OS X. Now we would like to show how this happens when using MerlinServer.
But a bit of theory first. iPhone sharing on MerlinServer…

  • uses the same port defined in the settings of Web service. Per default 7080 for tcp protocol.
  • the “Forward in router” option in the Web tab influences its address as well.
  • requires an enabled Project Sharing service.

Merlin & Merlin iPhone – how to share projects for iPhone

publishIn Merlin documentation, online help and various other web spaces one can read how to share projects for the iPhone when using Merlin for Mac OS X. The procedure is straight forwards. You open the projects in Merlin for Mac OS X, you call the publishing dialog by a click onto the yellow horn symbol, and start iPhone sharing.

  1. In case both Mac (with Merlin sharing the project) and iPhone are logged into the same LAN, you may use on the iPhone the Merlin *Server* automatically discovered over Bonjour and shown in the Servers list of Merlin iPhone app.

Merlin: MacOS X Firewall

As you know Merlin has very powerful publishing features that allow you to publish your project files, and share them with other users or other applications.

Here is a small description of how to set your Firewall for Merlin 2 and Merlin Server 2 on a current MacOS X 10.6.1 (snow leopard) configuration.
