Optimised printing
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

Merlin 1.3 now offers optimised printing. Before the print dialogue box from Mac OS X is shown, a Merlin dialogue box appears, in which the most important printing parameters can be given:

  • The alignment of the paper
  • For the Gantt view, whether the chart should be printed with or without the outline.
  • Whether the outline should be printed with alternating background colours.
  • The number of the printed pages in width and height
  • The measurements of the printed pages, also in width and height.
  • The scaling of the printout.

The settings for the alignment, width, height and scaling influence each-other. Therefore one can immediately see, how much space the printout will take. After a click on "Continue..." the dialogue box for the Mac OS X appears.

Exporting in CSV format
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

To be able to use the information in Merlin 1.3 with other applications, the current view can be exported in CSV format. In this context the "current view" is to be taken literally! Only columns that are currently displayed will be exported. To export elements this should be selected in the outline view. In the combination with the "Workspaces" a huge potential can be resulted for the support of other programs.

New Element: Checklist
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

For the many but very important processes within an activity we have designed the element Checklist in Merlin 1.3. It can list any desired number of individual checkpoints, that can be implemented one by one. A new entry in the checklist is made by clicking the "+" symbol under the list. A new list can be loaded from and saved as a file.

The status flags for a checklist are derived from the checked off points and the schedule of the corresponding activity as follows:

  • When the activity is not due and none of the points have been checked no status flags are displayed.
  • Should the activity be due, but none of the points have been checked, the flag changes to red.
  • When certain points have been checked, the flag is displayed in yellow.
  • When all the points have been checked, the flag is displayed in green.

Since version 1.3.1 the points on a checklist can be selected and with Cmd+C copied into the clipboard. With Cmd+V you can insert the contects of the clipboard into the checklist.

Automatic Spotlight support
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

Should Merlin 1.3 be started under Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.x), project contents (all text and names of a project) can be found via Spotlight. Additionally, a range of attributes have been defined that can specifically be requested: start and end date, project goal, budget, currency, resources and the number of activities, number of resources and elements. These attributes are available after the first processing of a project with Merlin 1.3.

Tip: Setting activities in the Gantt chart view
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

Since Merlin 1.3 the activities for the Gantt chart view can be set over the key SHIFT and a mouse click to the earliest possible start date. Therefore in backwards calculated projects the latest possible end date is defined.

Tip: Copying selected rows
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

The information from selected rows that are copied in Merlin 1.3, can now be used in other applications. All information from the current columns are considered in the clipboard including the columns header.

The Netplan View
Wednesday, 18 May 2005

One of the most noticeable improvements in Merlin 1.3 is - besides the new graphical symbols - the netplan. Using the shortcut Cmd+4 (or in the "View" menu or the toolbar) this view can be called up. The netplan is a modern form of the traditional PERT chart, it offers however, more extensive information and displays a logical sequence of the activities.
